Memorable Manitobans: Joseph Anthony “Joe” Degen (1929-2016)

Educator.

Born at Troy, New York on 6 June 1929, son of John and Anne Degen, he received a teacher’s certification and BEd degree in New York and MEd degree from the University of Manitoba. He taught for 27 years in the River East School Division, serving as teacher, Department Head of English, Guidance Counsellor, Vice-Principal at River East Collegiate, and Principal of Princess Margaret School (?-?) and Miles Macdonell Collegiate (1985-1988). In retirement, he coordinated religious education for teachers at Catholic schools at St. Paul’s College. He died at Winnipeg on 8 February 2016.
