Memorable Manitobans: Samuel Broadfoot Cowan (1868-1922)Physician, surgeon. Born at Harrison, Ontario on 28 November 1868, son of James Cowan and Janet Broadfoot (1839-1921), he came to Manitoba in 1871 and was educated at Manitoba College (BA) and the University of Manitoba (MD 1893). He began the practice of medicine in 1894. On 4 May 1899, he married Georgina May Percival (1878-1942) of Winnipeg. They had four children: James Percival Cowan (1900-1921), Harry Allyn Cowan (1901-?), Margaret Isabel Copeland Cowan (1906-?), and Percival G. Cowan (?-?). He served as a Portage la Prairie alderman (1890-1891). He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and the Presbyterian Church. He died at Portage la Prairie on 16 July 1922 and was buried in the Portage Hillside Cemetery. See also:
