Memorable Manitobans: Samuel Broadfoot Cowan (1868-1922)
Physician, surgeon.
Born at Harrison, Ontario on 28 November 1868, son of James Cowan and Janet Broadfoot (1839-1921), he came to Manitoba in 1871 and was educated at Manitoba College (BA) and the University of Manitoba (MD 1893). He began the practice of medicine in 1894. On 4 May 1899, he married Georgina May Percival (1878-1942) of Winnipeg. They had four children: James Percival Cowan (1900-1921), Harry Allyn Cowan (1901-?), Margaret Isabel Copeland Cowan (1906-?), and Percival G. Cowan (?-?). He served as a Portage la Prairie alderman (1890-1891). He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and the Presbyterian Church. He died at Portage la Prairie on 16 July 1922 and was buried in the Portage Hillside Cemetery.
