Memorable Manitobans: Francis Herbert Carscadden (1886-1961)

Farmer.

Born in Durham County, Ontario on 3 March 1886, son of George E. Carscadden and Anna Smith, the family moved to Manitoba in 1887, to a 320-acre farm in Township 11, Range 26 near Virden. His father died in 1896 so, when he was 16 years old, he left school to help run the farm, which he took over when he reached majority. On 8 January 1908, he married Helen McGregor (?-?) at Hargrave and they had two sons and a daughter. He was a member of the IOOF and the Episcopal Church. He moved to Birtle in 1933 then to a farm near Solsgirth in 1943 where he worked until 1960. He died at Hamiota on 7 April 1961 and was buried in the Birtle Cemetery.
