Memorable Manitobans: William Ewart Campbell (1885-1959)

Physician.

Born at Minnedosa on 5 November 1885, he moved to Winnipeg as a child. He received a BA degree from the University of Manitoba (1908) and graduated from the Manitoba Medical College in 1912. He took postgraduate studies in eye, ear, nose, and throat at Glasgow, Edinbugh, and London. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1916 and served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps.

After returning to Winnipeg after his military discharge, he opened a practice in ophthalmology and served in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Winnipeg General Hospital. Made a lecturer in the Department in 1931, he became a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Manitoba in 1940 and held the post until retirement in 1947. He served as President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1939-1940).

On 21 November 1931, he married Millicent Thornton Marlow (1899-1960) at Winnipeg and they had four sons: Murray Campbell, Stevenson Campbell, Robert Campbell, and William D. Campbell. He was a member of the Manitoba Club and St. Luke's Anglican Church. He lived at Suite C - Hugo Apartments at the time of his death.

He died at the Deer Lodge Hospital on 7 April 1959 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
