Memorable Manitobans: Stefan Agust Bjarnason (c1886-1922)

Educator.

Born around 1886, son of Gudmundar Bjarnason, he took Normal School training and taught in rural Manitoba, including at Arnes South School (1906), Arnes School (1908), and Mary Hill School (1909), and was Principal of Gimli School (1911-1912). He studied at Wesley College between teaching positions, received a Victoria scholarship, and received BA (1911) and BSc degrees. He and his wife Gudrun Ingveldur Bjarnason (c1889-1913) married prior to 1912. During the First World War, he was involved with the Brandon Experimental Farm and Morden Experimental Farm. Next he studied at the College of Agriculture at Berkeley, California where he received an MA (1921) degree. He died at his Winnipeg home, Suite 3 - Theodora Apartments, on 18 November 1922 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
