Memorable Manitobans: Bernice May McClelland Bedsworth (1921-2017)
Born in the Rural Municipality of Montcalm on 1 May 1921, daughter of Ella Glenne Paden (c1893-1973) and Thomas Wright McClelland (c1879-1953), she grew up on the family farmstead at 5-2-2East, attended school locally, and completed teacher training at Central Normal School in Winnipeg. She taught in both rural and urban Manitoba, including at Palestine School (1941-1942), St. Charles School (1942-1944, Principal), and Lord Nelson School (1944-1946). During a family roadtrip to southern California in the summer of 1947, she met John Roy “Johnny” Bedsworth (?-1987) at Montebello, California. Two months later, on 22 September 1947, they married at Emerson. She had three children and moved to Whittier, California, where she retired from teaching in 1984. In 2013, she retired to Tigard, Oregon to be closer to family. She died at Tigard on 19 January 2017.
