Memorable Manitobans: Ted Allan (1936-2024)

Journalist.

Born in Winnipeg in 1936, one of two sons of Arthur Carlyon “Tony” Allan and Dorothy Jean “Dot” Avent (1906-1989), he grew up in Fort Garry and attended St. John's Ravenscourt School, Vincent Massey Collegiate, and the University of Manitoba. Around 1955, he travelled to South Africa where he met his future wife, Dawn Younghusband. In April 1961, they married and subsequently had a son and two daughters after returning to Canada. He was a feature writer for the Winnipeg Tribune during the 1960s. The family lived in New Zealand from 1972 to 1975 then returned to Winnipeg where he was a weekly columnist for the Winnipeg Free Press. He was later a feature writer for the monthly news and lifestyle Winnipeg Magazine. One of his articles won a Governor General's National Magazine Award for Journalism. He died with his wife in a fire at their home on 16 December 2024.
