This collection
was twenty years in the making and comes from dozens of sources.
I've visited 90 percent of these places and most of the modern photos
are my own.
I've done my best to source and identify the archival photos, many are
widely available across the net.

A "Place"
is basically a recognized place
name associated with a town, village, district or a physical feature.
It was generally identified on common maps of its time, and may
now have
passed into disuse.
The collection is something I use
on a daily basis and many of the
images are cropped, sized and edited for my needs. In many cases
higher
resolution photos, and unretouched photos, are available on the
original
sites or in my collection.

Often more information is also available from the source - my first
mission is to have the photos available for use.
