On page 62 of the "THE SOURIS
PLAINS - from Pemmican to Wheat" an entry by F. C. Saunderson
entitled
"The Trail from Brandon" we learn about a place called Sod Town:
"Well as time went by and
the miles too slowly it at long last was time
to stop for dinner. This was at a place, afterwards known as Sod Town,
about half way between Brandon and Souris. The spot was quite ideal
because it was beside a slough surrounded by lush grass. Dad just
unyoked the oxen and let them loose to have a good drink and fuel up
for the rest of the trip."
Sod
Town is also mentioned on page 66:
A Winter Trip
An extract from H. H. Barnes' diary of a winter trip to Brandon, (they
failed to get all the way) is noted here is an example of the hardships
of winter travel in those days...
January 14th:
Did not getaway from Plum Creek until about 10:25 a.m. Reached
Stewart's at Sod Town for dinner and Eureka at four o’lock. "
On page 68 we learn that nearby South Beresford School (originally
Beresford School) was sometimes called
"Sod Town School" in the early days."
