Memorable Manitobans: Tilla E. Zinkan (1870-1944)


Born in Ontario on 23 December 1870, daughter of J. Zinkan and S. Zinkan (?-1932), the family moved to Winnipeg by 1882 and resided at 354 Donald Street. She attended the South Central School and Central Normal School, becoming a teacher at the Girls’ Central School (1884-1885, Standard 1), during which time she was made permanent staff of the Winnipeg School Division. Her career continued at Carlton School (1886-1887, Standard 5), and she went on to be the Principal of Mulvey School (1898-1901) and served as Second Vice-President (1892) of the Winnipeg Teachers’ Association. She left Winnipeg, being at Portland, Oregon by 1932. She died, unmarried, at Vancouver, British Columbia on 22 April 1944.
