Memorable Manitobans: Brion Whitford (1956-2006)
Filmmaker, community activist.
Born at Winnipeg in 1956, son of Roland and Isabel Whitford, his home community was Keeseekoowenin First Nation. He graduated from St. John’s High School (1975) and studied film at the University of Manitoba. He directed the film Heartland (1987) and wrote and narrated the documentary short film Its Hard to Get Here (1984). He co-directed the documentary film The Gift of Diabetes (2005) which explored the causes and challenges of the diabetes epidemic in the aboriginal community and which won a Public Service Award at the 2005 American Indian Film Festival held in San Francisco, California. He was also active in his home community in settling land claims disputes. He died at Winnipeg on 30 January 2006 and was interred at the Keeseekoowenin First Nation.
