Memorable Manitobans: Alfred Edward White (1885-1955)

Building contractor.

Born in England on 8 January 1885, he came to Canada in 1905 and moved to Brandon in 1911 where he worked as a building contractor until retirement in 1949. He served overseas with the Imperials during the First World War and with the Veterans Guard during the Second World War.

He and wife Jessie Reid Simon (1878-1940) had two children, Frederick Douglas White (1913-?) and Pearl White (1914-?, wife of E. F. Maas), and an adopted daughter, Margaret Mackie (1915-?). The family lived at 1040 Tenth Street (1921-1922), 1027 Eleventh Street (1924-1929), and 363 Tenth Street (1940-1955). He was a member of the St. George's Anglican Church, Royal Canadian Legion, and Brandon School Board.

He died at Brandon on 29 March 1955 and was buried in the military section of the Brandon Cemetery.
