Memorable Manitobans: Joseph Werier (1870-1956)

Wholesaler.

Born at Odessa, Russia in 1870, he moved to Winnipeg in 1904. He worked in retail and the wholesale business and eventually founded the wholesale firm of J. Werier and Company.

He and wife Mary Livshitz (1874-1946) had ten children: Alexander Werier (1899-1990), Harry Werier (1901-1978), Sarah Werier (1902-2007), Lena Leona Werier (1904-1978), Raymy Werier (1905-1916), Hymie Werier (1907-1958), Rosie Werier (1908-2000), Samuel Werier (1910-1993), Abraham “Abe” Werier (1912-1969, father of Arthur Mervin “Art” Werier), and Vera Werier (1915-2000).

He died while visiting Los Angeles, California on 28 February 1956 and was buried in the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery.
