Memorable Manitobans: Wasyl Topolnicky (1893-1978)Credit union leader. Born in Serafenci in Western Ukraine, he attended the University of Prague, graduating in 1924. He came to Canada in 1927, and in 1930 he organized the Kalyna Ukrainian Co-operative Limited in Winnipeg. In 1940 he organized the Carpathia Credit Union Limited, which employed him from 1940 to 1974, and he assisted in the organization of many other credit unions in Manitoba. He was active in the Ukrainian War Veterans Association and the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre. He was awarded a Manitoba Centennial Medal in 1970 and the Taras Shevchenko Medal in 1974.
