Memorable Manitobans: Karl Baldwin Thorkelson (1896-1984)
Educator, school inspector.
Born at Winnipeg on 1 February 1896, son of Icelandic immigrants Gudjon Thorkelson and Lilja Jonsdottir, he graduated from the University of Manitoba with BA (1948) and BEd (1949) degrees. He was Principal of Ardal School (1927-1930) then Maple Leaf Collegiate (1930-1949) at Morden, when he was appointed a Manitoba School Inspector, succeeding Clarence Moore, based at Virden. He retired in the summer of 1962 and was succeeded by R. R. Partridge. On 7 July 1928, he married Rose Hedges (1907-1988) at Winnipeg. He died at the Virden Hospital on 7 March 1984 and was buried in the Virden Cemetery.
