Professor.
Born at Calgary, Alberta on 5 October 1933, son of John William Teunissen and Mary Helena Foesier, he graduated from St. Mary's Boy's High School in 1951 then spent a year as a Novice of the Congregation of St. Basil at Richmond Hill, Ontario. He worked in the Consumer Products Division of Canadian Fairbanks-Morse before graduating with BA and MA degrees from the University of Saskatchewan. He received a doctoral degree from the University of Rochester in 1967.
He taught English at the University of Saskatchewan and University of Massachusetts before joining the University of Manitoba as Professor and Head (three terms) of its Department of English in 1972. He also taught in the University's short-lived degree program at Stony Mountain Penitentiary, in 1974. He served two terms as President of the University Faculty Club, a member of the founding editorial board of English Literary Renaissance, as editor of the academic journal Canadian Review of American Studies, as President (two terms) of the Canadian Association for American Studies, and as a member of committees for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Canadian Association of Chairmen of English, Association of Canadian University Teachers of English, and Canadian Federation for the Humanities.
He died at Winnipeg on 2 July 2025.
