Born at Pope on 11 December 1915, son of John Strachan (1876-1964) and Margaret Watt Stewart (1882-1974), his family moved to Carman in 1925. He attended Carman School before attending the University of Manitoba, from which he received a BSc degree in Agriculture (1938).
