Building contractor, hotelier.

Born at Dauphin on 17 May 1924, second-youngest of five children of William Stanier (?-?) and Mary Jeffrey (1892-?), his family moved to Swan River for a time before settling at Winnipeg. He worked at Brown and Rutherford (1946-1954) then, in 1954, he established a construction business, specializing in homes. A downturn in the economy in the early 1960s prompted him to acquire land along on Portage Avenue where he built the city’s first fully-electrified motel. He operated it for a few years, along with the Mather Motel, before retiring to spend more time at his cottage at Clearwater Bay.

He and wife Elizabeth Mary “Bette” (?-2003) had a son and a daughter. The family lived at 353 Truro Street (c1968). An avid curler, he was an honorary life member of the Deer Lodge Curling Club (President, 1963-1964) and the Manitoba Curling Association. He was also a member of the Governor-General’s Curling Club in Ottawa, Ontario. His other great passion was flying which he indulged until ill health forced him to give it up.

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 8 October 1998.
