Memorable Manitobans: Stephen Clare “Steve” Sparling (1914-1961)

Educator, administrator.

Born near Carberry on 13 November 1914, son of William Charles Sparling (1876-1948) and Mabel Annie Best (?-?), he was raised at Wellwood and attended Wellwood School. He taught school in Saskatchewan and at Rossburn School (1938-1939). He then spent nine years working for the Sanatorium Board of Manitoba, based at Ninette and Winnipeg, and was a member of the board of the Society of Crippled Children and Adults, and Chairman of the Rehabilitation Committee of the Welfare Council of Greater Winnipeg.

In November 1951, he was appointed Executive Director of the Society of Crippled Children and Adults of Manitoba and served until his death. He guided the first union in North America of Easter Seals and the March of Dimes under one administration, played a key role in drafting Manitoba's first rehabilitation plans for handicapped persons and was working to establish a pre-school centre for handicapped children at the time of his death.

He and wife Marion Stefan (c1920-2010) had four sons. The family lived at 273 Oakwood Avenue. He was a member of Riverview United Church and the Masons (Fort Garry Lodge).

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 12 December 1961 and was buried in the Garry Memorial Park.
