Memorable Manitobans: Merrill Shepard (1905-1986)Lawyer. Born at Winnipeg on 30 March 1905, son of Clarence Day Shepard and May Merrill, he graduated from Yale University (1925), received a law degree from the University of Manitoba (1927), and an MA degree from Columbia University (1943). During the Second World War, he served in the US Navy and helped to draft the peace treaty with Japan. Returning to Chicago following his military discharge, he practiced law for many years, specializing in labour law. He died at his home at Palisades, New York on 3 January 1986 and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.
