Lawyer, judge.
Born in Winnipeg on 20 March 1938, son of Lloyd George Scott (1912-1988) and Winnifred Grace Mark (1913-1995), he was raised in St. Vital. After graduating from the University of Manitoba with a law degree (1963), he was called to the Manitoba Bar and practiced civil litigation law with the firm of Thompson Dilts Jones Hall Dewar and Ritchie. He was made a Queen's Counsel (1977).
Appointed a Puisne Judge to the Court of Queen's Bench in June 1985, he was made Associate Chief Chief in October 1985 and Chief Justice in July 1990. He retired from the bench in March 2013 as the longest-serving Chief Justice in Manitoba history. He then returned to private law practice with the firm of Hill Sokalski Walsh Olson, working in arbitration and mediation.
On 24 June 1960, he married Mary Louise MacPherson at the Deer Lodge United Church. They had three daughters. He served on the board for Legal Aid Manitoba (1976-1982), was President of the Law Society of Manitoba (1983-1984), was a member of the Advisory Board for The Winnipeg Foundation (1990-2005) including a term as Chair (2001-2005), and was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada Advisory Board (2017).
In recognition of his community service, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Manitoba (2000), received a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and was inducted into the Order of Manitoba (2013) and Order of Canada (2015).
He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 21 November 2024.
