Memorable Manitobans: Reginald Norman Scotney (1876-1930)

Lawyer.

Born at Winchester, Hampshire, England on 15 November 1876, son of Walter Scotney and Emily Scate, he was educated at Honiton and Uffingham, Oxford University (BA degree). He graduated from Oxford in 1897 and articled in law with his father and later with the London (England) firm of Wright, Onslow and Beamish. He was admitted to practice (by proxy) on 13 October 1911. He was managing clerk of the law business of George Edmonds at Portsmouth, England.

He came to Winnipeg in 1905 and was attached to the law office of Bradshaw Richards and Affleck and served as an accountant with the Manitoba Canning Company for two years. He then moved to Elkhorn and taught at Kola School. He was admitted to practice as a solicitor in the Court of King’s Bench on 27 November 1911. He was Solicitor for the Bank of Commerce and Union Bank at Elkhorn, the Village of Elkhorn, and the Rural Municipality of Archie. He was Secretary-Treasurer for the Village of Elkhorn for four years.

In 1902, he married Alice Maude Mary Bramwell (?-?) and they had two sons and three daughters. He was a member of the Manitoba Law Society, Masons (Worshipful Master of Elkhorn Lodge No. 74), and Elkhorn School Board. His recreations included curling and tennis.

He died at his Elkhorn residence on 3 August 1930 and was buried in the Elkhorn Cemetery.
