Lucien Alphonse Schickele
|
Chef.
Born in Alsace-Lorraine, France on 12 July 1873, son of Louis and Madeleine Schickele, he apprenticed as a chef at hotels in Strasbourg, Paris, and London. During the Yukon Gold Rush in 1898, he moved to Dawson City and operated a restaurant and hotel. Two years later, he returned to Paris and was chef in the Pavilion Bleu at the Paris Exposition of 1900. He then went to New York City where he was assistant chef at the Knickerbocker Hotel.
In 1906, he moved to Winnipeg to join the culinary staff of the newly opened Royal Alexandra Hotel, assuming the position of head chef. He held the position for 33 years, retiring on 30 September 1939, having trained many chefs for the Canadian Pacific Railway.
He and wife Kate Cecilia Bland (1874-1932) had two children: Madeleine Florence Schickele [Sister Cecilia] (1910-?) and Gordon Louis Schickele (1913-?, husband of Helen Gytha Anderson, son-in-law of Peter Anderson). On 8 May 1935, he married Elfreda Josephine Weber (1885-1957, widow of Lieutenant H. N. Baxter), manager of the coffee shop at the Royal Alexandra Hotel, at the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
He died at Kelowna, British Columbia on 9 June 1960 and was buried in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery.
