Memorable Manitobans: Harvey I. Pollock (1933-2023)

Lawyer, whistler.

Born at St. Joseph's Hospital on 10 April 1933, he was raised at Bethany and attended Bethany School before returning to Winnipeg in 1944. He attended Machray School and St. John's High School before enrolling at the University of Manitoba. He graduated from the Manitoba Law School in 1957 and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1958.

He worked as a solicitor for the Children's Aid Society and later practiced with the law firm of Solomon Hart Green and Solomon Hart Green. He opened his own practice in 1960 and became associated with Israel Hyner Greenberg in 1961. He was later a partner in the firm of Pollock and Conner and was made a Queen's Counsel (1971). He was involved in the inquest into the shooting of John Joseph Harper. As the senior partner of Pollock & Company, he practiced with his son and two grandsons.

On 28 December 1954, he married Sylvia Miriam Friedman (1935-2011) and they had three children, including Karyn Rochelle Pollock (1955-2009) and Nathan Daniel Pollock (1960-1982). A long-time whistler, he formed the Lipsomaniacs and performed while in university. In 1977, he won the World Whistling Championship and performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

He died at Winnipeg on 7 February 2023 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
