Memorable Manitobans: Marshall Cameron “Marsh” Phimister (1914-1971)

Bandleader, nightclub owner, businessman.

Born at Winnipeg on 16 November 1914, one of three children of entertainer Alexander “Sandy” Phimister (1886-1963) and Elizabeth Millar “Beth” Marshall (?-?), he attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate.

His career in the entertainment media of television, radio, and stage started in the 1930s with performances at The Cave, one the earliest city nightspots. He did shows at the Dance Pavilion in Winnipeg Beach, was a master of ceremonies at the Hollow Mug restaurant in the International Inn, and performed with a trio at the Drummer Boy Lounge in the Fort Garry Hotel. For many years he operated a nightclub on Pembina Highway known as Jack’s Place. At the time of his death, he was a public relations representative for the brokerage firm of Samson-Shaen and Company.

On 22 March 1948, he married Audrey Elizabeth Green (?-?) at Knox United Church. They had no children before divorcing in 1964. He was an active member of the YMCA and was keenly interested in sports and sky diving. In 1966, he received a City of Winnipeg Community Service Awards.

He died in a vehicle accident near Selkirk on 4 August 1971.
