Athlete, pilot.

Born at Winnipeg on 10 July 1922, second daughter of John Draper Perrin and Ruth Taylor Lytle (1888-1986), she was an active athlete in skating, swimming and horseback riding. She won numerous ribbons in English riding discipline equestrian competitions. A student at United College, she was interested in aviation, having flown several times with her father to the San Antonio gold mine. She was an early female student pilot who, on 27 June 1942, was killed in a plane crash at Stevenson Field. It was the flight school’s first fatality. The crash was prominently reported in local newspapers. An inquiry ruled it was an accident resulting from a mid-air collision caused by another student pilot who also died. After a funeral at St. George’s Anglican Crescentwood, she was buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery. Her pallbearers were Bob Greaves, Freddy Drewry, Bill Douglas, Marshall Cameron Phimister, Jack Young, and Barry Manning.
