He worked as a building contractor in Winnipeg, responsible for building many of the homes in Charleswood and the older portion of Chapman School. He retired in 1959.
On 16 April 1914, he married Carrie Olson Svanquit (1892-1995) and they had seven children: Melvin “Bud” Paulson (1916-1994), Elma Paulson (?-?, wife of Donald Miller), Verna Pauline Paulson (1918-1997, wife of Thomas Kinrade), Irene Paulson (?-?), Lorna Paulson (1921-?, wife of Owen Hall), Ethel May Paulson (1922-2011, wife of Harry Belfry), and June Paulson (?-?, wife of James Sipley). The family lived at 291 Elmhurst Road.
He died at the Grace Hospital on 9 October 1969 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery. He is commemorated by a public park in Winnipeg.
