Memorable Manitobans: James Bryson “Doc” Murray (1925-2007)

Physician.

Born at Toronto, Ontario on 18 May 1925 to Jane Eaton (1896-1958) and David Murray (1893-1952), upon reaching adulthood he served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. While earning his medical degree, he helped to finance his medical education by working as a sleeping-car conductor for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Upon graduation, he practiced medicine in Carberry and Vancouver, British Columbia, then founded the Springfield Heights Medical Group at Winnipeg, where he remained for 20 years. Following private practice, he worked at the Workers Compensation Board for another nine years before retiring.

During his career, he was on the Executive and eventually became President of the General Practitioners’ Association and served as Chairman of the Special Committee on General Practice for the Canadian Medical Association. He was an active staff member at Concordia Hospital, where he was later appointed to Honorary Staff and served on the Executive of Medical Staff and also as President. He was a member and President of the Board of Directors of the Concordia Hospital Foundation. He served as physician and Manitoba Governor for the Youth Bowling Council and team physician for the East Kildonan Lions and Winnipeg Jets.

In 1954, he married Grace Audrey Van Slyck (c1930-2020) and they went on to have four children. His enjoyment of golf led him to membership at Rossmere Country Club, where he served on the Board of Directors and as President. The Christmas Cheer Board welcomed him as a volunteer, as did the Citizens’ Advisory Committee for Stony Mountain Penitentiary. As a talented, self-taught pianist, he shared his love of music with all those close to him.

He died at Winnipeg on 30 April 2007 and was buried in the Transcona Cemetery.
