Memorable Manitobans: Roger Eugene Minkus (1942-2025)

Educator.

Born at Neepawa on 29 April 1942, son of Casmir “Charles/Charlie” Minkus (?-1983) and Beatrice Morrison Kwait (1908-1992), he attended Neepawa School, studied physical education at the University of Manitoba (c1965), and participated in its athletics program. He attended the Manitoba Teachers College and completed a MEd degree at Laramie, Wyoming. He was later inducted to Bison Walkway of Honour (Track and Field, 1960).

He first taught in rural Manitoba at Medora School (?-?), with most of his career spent within the River East School Division, as a teacher (1970s) and Vice-Principal (1978-1980) at Munroe Junior High School, after which he was Vice-Principal of John Henderson Junior High School (1982-1985) and Princess Margaret School (1985-1986), and Principal of Munroe Junior High School (1986-1992), Princess Margaret School (1992-1994), and Birds Hill School (?-?). Upon retirement, he lived at Oakbank for 15 years where he took up gardening and automotive restoration and spent his final years at Actionmarguerite St. Boniface (185 Rue Despin). He married Lynne Lechner, had two children, and inherited two step-children.

He died at Winnipeg on 24 January 2025.
