Born at Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scotland on 28 December 1887, he came to Canada in 1911 and settled at Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan for a short time before moving to Transcona. He established McLean Printers Limited and, in 1917, moved it to Elmwood where he began publishing the Elmwood Advertiser, later renamed the Elmwood Herald. He was President of the Manitoba Weekly Newspapers Association (1950-1951).
On 29 September 1916, he married Jeanette Anderson Miller (?-1958) and they had three sons: John Bell “Jack” McLean (1918-1994), Norman Miller “Bunt” McLean (1921-2002), and Gordon Brown McLean (1928-1998). He was a member of Gordon-King Memorial United Church for over 50 years and was a member of the Elmwood Curling Club, Old Boys Club, Royal Canadian Legion (Prince Edward), and AF and AM.
He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 6 October 1972 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
