Memorable Manitobans: John Douglas McFarland (?-2022)Civil servant. Born at Calgary, Alberta, son of Joseph Douglas “Doug” McFarland (1901-1984) and Ethel Mildred Peterson (1902-1994), he came to Winnipeg at an early age and attended Kelvin High School and St. Paul's High School. He received a BA degree (1960) from Concordia College at Moorhead, Minnesota and an MA degree (1980) from the University of Manitoba. His 22-year career in the provincial civil service including being Director of the Historic Resources Branch and Secretary of the Historic Sites Advisory Board of Manitoba (1973-1984) then Head of the Heritage Properties Unit with the Manitoba Parks Branch (1984-1991). On 10 June 1961, he married June Phyllis Weber at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and they had two daughters. He died at Winnipeg on 26 July 2022.
