Memorable Manitobans: Harvey Ross McEwen (1889-1983)
Born at Stonewall on 23 December 1889, son of Hugh D. McEwen (1848-1929) and Jane Ann Good (1861-1947), he attended Stonewall Collegiate where he was active in sprinting and soccer. After attending the Central Normal School, taught at Centre School (1909). He graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1913 then established a veterinary practice at Stonewall. He served as President of the Manitoba Veterinary Association and assisted in forming the Rockwood Agricultural Society. In 1936, he moved to Winnipeg to become the head veterinary inspector at Canada Packers, working there until retirement.
On 10 October 1917, he married Bertha Anna Oughton (1893-1974) at Stonewall and they had two sons: Lloyd George McEwen (1918-1924) and Arnold Ross McEwen (1920-2013). He served as councillor for the Town of Stonewall, attended Stonewall United Church where he was Sunday School Superintendent, and was a Mason (Stonewall Lodge No. 12). An active curler, in the 1930s he won the Grand Aggregate of the Manitoba Bonspiel. In later years, the family lived at 151 Munro Street (Cavell Drive) in St. James and attended St. James United Church.
He died at the Grace Hospital on 28 January 1983 and was buried in the Stonewall Cemetery.
