Memorable Manitobans: Kenneth Frederick Stanley “Ken” Martin (1914-2010)

Artist.

Born at Winnipeg on 24 January 1914, one of four sons of Frederick Hugh Martin (1884-1950) and Josephine Maud Johnson (1886-1954), he attended Isaac Brock School, Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, and the Winnipeg School of Art. In 1938, he became a commercial artist at Brigden’s, interrupting his career during the Second World War to serve as an aerial photographer in the Royal Canadian Armed Force.

He returned to Brigden’s after the war and rose to the position of Art Director. He took early retirement to focus on painting. His work in oil, acrylic, and watercolour featured landscapes of the Canadian prairies, the forests of southeastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario, and views of Lake Winnipeg from his cottage at Ponemah.

On 5 July 1941, he married schoolteacher Frances Mary “Fran” Riddell (?-1998, daughter of J. C. Riddell) at Westminster United Church and they had two daughters. He was President of the Manitoba Society of Artists (1960-1962). He died at Winnipeg on 17 December 2010. In 2024, a collection of his art was sold as a fundraiser for Westworth United Church.
