Dentist, community activist.
Born at Winnipeg on 26 November 1920 to Mendl and Golda Malkin, he grew up in the city’s North End, where the family operated Malkin’s General Store. He attended St. John’s High School and then went to the University of Manitoba to earn a BA degree. He acquired his dental degree from the University of Toronto in 1946.
Upon returning to Winnipeg, he set up a dental practice on Sargent Avenue, sharing a building with his older brother Sol Malkin (1916-1995), a medical doctor. In 1951, he married Sheila Lillan Fratkin (1929-2021) and they went on to have two children, including journalist Murray Malkin (1953-2012). He believed in giving back to his community and served it in many ways. He and Sheila were founding members of the Adas Yeshurun Herzlia Synagogue, Winnipeg’s only Modern Orthodox synagogue, where he also served twice as President. He was President of Alpha Omega, his dental fraternity, and also served on the boards of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Reh-Fit Centre.
After heart bypass surgery, he retired from dental practice when he was 65. He and his wife travelled the world as he perfected his skills as a photographer. He enjoyed working out at the YMHA, YMCA, and the Rady Centre, loved a good debate, and read on many topics, from politics and religion to medicine and sports. He particularly enjoyed a meal at his favourite restaurant, the well-known Shanghai in Winnipeg’s Chinatown.
He died at Winnipeg on 27 January 2007 and was buried in the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery.
