Memorable Manitobans: Douglas Francis “Doug” MacIsaac (1936-1992)

Educator, administrator, businessman, community activist.

Born at Scott, Saskatchewan on 15 March 1936, son of Francis MacIsaac and Jen Dewar, his early education occurred there. He received a BA degree from the University of Saskatchewan and a BEd from the University of Manitoba. He taught at Machray School (1959-1960) and was the Principal of Nellie McClung Collegiate (1966-1972).

After a brief principalship at Watrous, Saskatchewan, he moved to Russell where he was Superintendent of the Pelly Trail School Division (1972-1981). He then became a certified jewellery appraiser and managed the family store, MacIsaac's Jewellery, for ten years. In 1991, he was appointed Principal of Waywayseecappo Community School which he held until shortly before his death.

He married Anne Anderson and they had two sons and three daughters. An active member of the Liberal Party of Manitoba, he was its candidate for the Birtle-Russell constituency in the 1977 general election and received the party's Molgat Award. He served as Deputy Mayor of Russell, a trustee of the Pelly Trail School Division, and a member of the town council, hospital board, library board, chamber of commerce, Vanguard Credit Union board, and Elks Lodge. He was Chairman of the Parkland West Regional Development Committee.

He died at Russell on 6 August 1992 and was buried in the Russell Memorial Garden. He is commemorated by the Doug MacIsaac Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Major Pratt Collegiate in Russell.
