Memorable Manitobans: Paul Elliott Long (1917-2007)

Lawyer.

Born in his family home in Elmwood on 28 September 1917, one of six children of Louise Lydia Langstaff (1880-1961) and William James Long (1877-1923), he attended Lord Selkirk School, St. John’s Technical High School, and United College, then obtained a Law degree from the University of Manitoba. During the Second World War, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force to serve at radar installations in Nova Scotia and Scotland.

In 1946, he was called to the Manitoba Bar and entered law practice in Winnipeg as a partner in the firm of Robertson and Long. He was appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 1967, which recognized his exceptional abilities in Manitoba’s legal profession.

On 5 November 1949, he married Grace Edna Archer-Anderson (1918-1991) at the First Presbyterian Church and they had a daughter. Throughout his life, his spare time was spent in outdoor pursuits, a passion he shared with family members.

He died on 6 August 2007.
