Memorable Manitobans: Leon Norman “Leo” Ledohowski (1944-2025)

Businessman.

Born at Winnipeg on 15 March 1944, one of six children of Walter Ledohowski (1916-1987) and Anne Zasitko (1923-2005), his childhood was spent at Poplarfield. His family later moved to Broadview and then Yorkton, Saskatchewan. After completing BA and BComm degrees at the University of Saskatchewan and an MBA degree at McMaster University, he was a professor in finance and economics at Carleton University before returning to Manitoba and the University of Manitoba.

By 1975, he had joined the hospitality industry and spent the next 50 years operating hotels in Manitoba, first with Ledohowski Hotels, then Hospitality Corporation of Manitoba, and finally with Canad Inns. He was a longstanding member of the Manitoba Hotel Association and Hotel Association of Canada. He served on the boards of the Development Bank of Canada and the Bank of Canada.

In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002), Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022), and was inducted into the Order of Manitoba (2022). He received a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Manitoba (2003) and an FCMA designation from the Certified Management Accountants of Canada (2003).

In 1968, he married Joanne Dengis at Hamilton, Ontario and they had three daughters and a son before separating in 2003. He was the Honorary Consult for Ukraine in Manitoba. He served on the board for Partners in the Park, on the Advisory Committee on Judicial Appointments for the Province of Manitoba, on the Red Tape Commission for the City of Winnipeg, and on the board for Destination Winnipeg.

He died at Winnipeg on 4 August 2025.
