Garland Everett Laliberte

Engineer, professor, administrator.
Born in 1936 on the family farm in the Rural Municipality of Shell River, son of Joachim “Paul” Laliberte (?-1998) and Verna Belle Wilson (1910-2005), he attended Grand Narrows School, Sunny Slope School, and Goose Lake High School, graduating from the latter in 1951. He attended the University of Manitoba before moving to the University of Saskatchewan where he received BSc (1956) and MSc (1961) degrees in Agricultural Engineering. He then received a PhD degree (1966) in Engineering from Colorado State University.
His first job as an engineer took him to southern Alberta for eleven years, working for the federal government, where he met and married Audry Whitlock (1937-1997), a teacher at Vauxhall. They subsequently had two daughters. He returned to the University of Manitoba where he was a professor then Head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering (17 years) and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering (1989-1994). He served as President of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (1989). He retired in 1996. In the 1970s and 1980s, he operated a farm near Roblin.
He died at Winnipeg on 30 July 2022.
