Memorable Manitobans: Peter Alexander Kondra (1911-2011)

Professor, community activist.

Born at Mazeppa, Saskatchewan in 1911, one of ten children of Oleksa Kondra and Evdokia Dyda, He attended Yorkton Collegiate before receiving BSA and MSc degrees at the University of Manitoba, and a PhD degree in Animal Genetics at the University of Minnesota. He returned to Winnipeg to join the University of Manitoba as a Professor of Animal Science.

Following retirement, he was Principal of St. Andrew's College (1978-1981) and worked toward establishment of its Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies. He chaired a committee that reprinted the Ostroh Bible and served as President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (1971-1974). In recognition of his community service, he received a Taras Shevchenko Medal (?) and a New Millennium Multicultural Award.

On 7 October 1939, he married Rozalia “Rose” Zubrak (1918-2017) at St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church and they had two sons and a daughter. He died at Winnipeg on 22 July 2011 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
