Memorable Manitobans: Charles William “Charlie” Ives (1915-2007)

Squash pro.

Born at Fulham, London, England in 1915, he began a career in racket sports as a ball-boy at Wimbledon and became a junior professional by the time he was 18. He moved to Winnipeg in 1934 and taught at the Winnipeg Winter Club and Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club. In 1977, he joined the Carleton Club. On 29 May 1937, he married Mollie Irene Beard at Winnipeg and they had a daughter. In recognition of his community service, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977) and a City of Winnipeg Community Service Award (1984), and was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (1986). He died at Winnipeg in September 2007.
