Memorable Manitobans: Yehuda Maurice “Yude” Henteleff (1927-2024)

Lawyer.

Born at Winnipeg on 7 June 1927, son of market gardeners Nathan Henteleff (1900-1984) and Rose Roseman (1900-1996), he attended St. Germain School, Machray School, and Glenlawn Collegiate. He received BSA and Law (1951) degrees from the University of Manitoba. He was called to the Manitoba Bar in July 1951.

He began a long career in the law with the firm of Walsh Micay then Shinbane Dorman Kanee and Henteleff. He specialized in corporate and commercial law, estate planning, mediation, and conciliation. In 1965, he partnered with Harold Buchwald and they were joined by Israel Asper (1970) and Simkin Gallagher (1993) to form Buchwald Asper Gallagher Henteleff. In 1998, the firm merged with Pitblado and Hoskin to become Pitblado Buchwald Asper. He was appointed a Queen's Counsel (1982).

He co-founded the Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba and was the Honorary Solicitor for the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada. He was Chair of the Advisory Committee for the Canadian Museum of Human Rights. Active in Winnipeg's Jewish community, he served as Chair of the B'Nai Brith Camp Board, President of the YMHA, and a member of the Boards for the Winnipeg Board of Jewish Education, Winnipeg Jewish Community Council, Social Action Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress, and Hebrew University. He helped to establish the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. He was Honourary Solicitor of the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada and Chair of the Multiple Appeals Commission.

In recognition of his community service, he was inducted into the Order of Canada (1998). He received a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and an honorary doctorate from the University of Manitoba (2006).

On 30 August 1953, he married Lois Merna Greenberg (daughter of Dr. Noman H. Greenberg) at the Rosh Pina Synagogue and they had two sons and two daughters before divorcing in 1987. He later partnered with Joy Winchell.

He died on 8 December 2024 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
