Born at Hamilton, Ontario on 4 August 1935, son of James Ernest Harrison and Bernice Evelyn Saunders, he enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1954 and served in the Ordnance Corps until 1963, in Belgium, Calgary (Alberta), Churchill, and Fort Osborne Barracks. After leaving the military, he worked at Rosser and Lac du Bonnet then, in 1968, he took classes at the University of Manitoba then transferred to the University of Winnipeg, receiving a degree in History in 1974.
In 1975, following the tragic death of his brother Dennis Harrison, who had been a co-owner of the weekly newspaper, The Manitoba Beaver, he moved to Beausejour and purchased the paper from the remaining partners. He was its journalist, editor, and photographer. He sold the business to Derksen Printers of Steinbach in 1988.
On 29 December 1976, he married Margaret Catherine Doern of Winnipeg and they had three children. He served as a trustee in the Agassiz School Division.
He died at Beausejour on 27 February 2025.
