Memorable Manitobans: Serhij Gerus (1900-1988)Cleric. Born at Korets, Ukraine on 19 October 1900, he was educated at the Krements Orthodox Seminary and the University of Warsaw and ordained a priest in the Orthodox Church of Poland in 1923, where he served until forced overseas in 1944. Between 1945 and 1950, he served as the Official Orthodox Chaplain in the DP Camps of Munster Lager and Fallingbostel. In 1950, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada brought Gerus to Canada, where he worked as a parish priest in Vida and Winnipeg, as well as Thunder Bay, Ontario. Gerus also served several terms as a member and the Vice President of the Presidium of the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. From 1952 until 1978, he was a Professor of Theology and eventual Dean of the Theological Faculty at St. Andrew’s College at the University of Manitoba, which awarded him with an honorary Doctorate of Divinity. He also received honors from the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences of Canada, Research Institute of Volyn, Order of St. Andrew, and Ukrainian Self-Reliance League.
