Memorable Manitobans: James Polson George (1889-1970)

Physician and surgeon, pilot.

Born at Miami on 6 April 1889, son of John G. George (1852-1932) and Christian “Kit” Patterson (1854-1913), brother of John Milton George, he graduated with degrees in medicine and surgery from the Manitoba Medical College in 1910.

He served as a coroner for several years beginning in 1918 and practiced medicine in Winnipeg for over 50 years. He was a member of the Manitoba College of Physicians and Surgeons, was the Chief Medical Examiner for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for over 25 years, and Medical Examiner for the Department of Transport.

For many years, he was President and General Manager of the Winnipeg Flying Club. During the Second World War, he was active with the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He retired from active medical practice in 1962 but continued to examine pilots for the Department of Transport until 1967. In recognition of his community service, he was inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Crocus (1967).

He and wife Annabelle Adams (?-1963) had three daughters: Inas Helen George (1917-2002), Virginia Ross George (1924-?, wife of E. J. Shaw), and Mercedes George (?-2012, wife of Kenneth Raymond Steeds).

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 16 August 1970 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
