Memorable Manitobans: John Patmore Gemmell (1917-1987)


Born at Winnipeg on 15 September 1917, son of Janet Victoria Patmore, he grew up at Assiniboia, Saskatchewan. He attended the University of Manitoba and graduated with a medical degree in 1941. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and served in Europe from 1942 to 1945. He returned to Winnipeg and, in 1949, he became a full-time member of the Department of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. From 1964 to 1974, he was Head of Medicine and Physician-in-Charge at the Winnipeg General Hospital. He died at his Winnipeg home on 25 June 1987.
