Memorable Manitobans: Walter Thorvaldur Fredrickson (1907-1974)


Born at Antler, Saskatchewan on 13 April 1907, only son of Samundur Fredrickson and Gudrun Stephanson, he took teacher training at the Brandon Normal School (1926-1927). He was the Principal of Ardal School (1935-1936), McConnell School (1936-1939), Holmfield School (1939-1942), Binscarth School (1942-1944), Elgin School (1944-1947), Boissevain School (1947-1949), and Strathclair School (1949-1957). On 17 July 1944, he married Helen Barbara Sheppard (1917-2011) of Binscarth and they subsequently had two children. In 1957, the family moved to Brandon where he continued teaching, at Brandon Collegiate (1958-1959), Earl Haig School (1960-1961) and McLaren School (1961-1962), and including service as Principal of the Central School (1962-1968). He died at Winnipeg on 23 February 1974 and was buried in the Brandon Cemetery.
