Born in the village of Leonidovka in Soviet Ukraine on 25 November 1920 to Agathe Hoeppner (1901-1979) and Gerhard G. Enns (1896-1957), he immigrated with his family to Manitoba in the summer of 1924. He grew up on a farm in the Steinbach area, and then moved to Winnipeg, where he completed degrees in Theology, Arts, and Education.
As a certified teacher, he spent most of his professional life teaching in the Winnipeg School Division, including at Lord Selkirk School (1955-1956) and Isaac Brock School (1956-1962). He served as President of both the Winnipeg Teachers’ Association and the Manitoba Teachers’ Society (1972-1973). Before retirement, he was Chair of the Manitoba Social Services Appeal Board and a board member for the Teachers’ Retirement Allowances Fund (1974-1976).
In 1947, he married Evelyn Ratzlaff Loewen (1922-2008) and they went on to have four children. He was known for his wide interests, including history, politics, science, nature, and religion, and for his passionate caring for people and social justice. He also enjoyed gardening throughout his lifetime and managed to keep at it until he was 87. He served as a North Kildonan Municipal Counsellor and was active in the New Democratic Party since its formation.
He died at Winnipeg on 21 July 2010.
