Memorable Manitobans: John Elmhirst (1867-1932)

Farmer.

Born in Peterborough County, Ontario on 15 June 1867, son of Frank Elmhirst (?-?) and Agnes Weir (1834-1923), he quit school at the age of 15 and assisted his father in the lumbering business, later farming. He moved to Manitoba in 1893 and, six years later, took up 640 acres of farmland in Sections 6 and 7, Township 10, Range 13W in the Rural Municipality of North Cypress.

On 23 March 1898, he married Luetta Nelson (1874-1961) at Moosomin, Saskatchewan. They had four children: Marjorie Stratford Elmhirst (1902-1990, wife of Daniel McMillan), John N. “Jack” Elmhirst (1906-1977), Anna Phyllis Eleanor Elmhirst (1914-?), and Hilda Elmhirst (1914-?). He was a member of the IOOF and St. John’s Church at Pleasant Point. He served three years as a councilor and two years (1908-1909) as Reeve of the RM of North Cypress and a trustee for the Pleasant Point School District.

He died at his home in the Pleasant Point district on 15 November 1932 and was buried in the Carberry Cemetery.
