Artist.
Born at Ujpest, Hungary on 19 May 1929, she apprenticed in sculpture and trained at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest. She came to Canada with her family in 1958 and settled at Toronto, Ontario. She moved to Winnipeg in 1967 with her husband, textile designer Alfred Dukes, and their three sons, and enrolled in the School of Art at the University of Manitoba, studying with Ivan Eyre, and graduating in 1972. Over the next four decades, from a studio in the Exchange District, she created paintings in a diverse range of themes and exhibited her work across Canada and internationally. Her work was displayed in the Rady Centre, Investors Group Building, and Millennium Library. Inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, one of the first women to receive this honour, she wrote an autobiography entitled Circus shortly before her death. She died at Winnipeg on 8 June 2003. Retrospectives on her artistic legacy were held at the Martha Street Studio in 2006 and the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 2008.
