Curler, community activist.
Born at Winnipeg on 20 January 1916 to Mary Margaret McIntomney (1877-1937) and Daniel Dooley Jr. (1869-1950), he graduated from St. John’s High School and spent his first years working at Canadian Pacific Railway, following which he moved on to managerial positions in the hotel industry. In 1939, he married Elizabeth Anne “Betty” Ottenbriet (1916-2006) and began married life in Elmwood. They moved to Norwood in 1951, where they raised their six children and became active members of Holy Cross Parish. A job in 1944 at Shea’s Brewery (later purchased by Labatt’s) led to a long career for him with the company. He was Director of Purchasing until his retirement in 1981.
He was active with the Norwood Council of the Knights of Columbus, where he became Grand Knight in 1955-1956. His community involvement included working with the Knights in the establishment of the St. Amant Centre. He also served as President of the Children’s Aid Society of Eastern Manitoba. The Canadian Red Cross acknowledged his commitment to supporting its blood bank program by recognizing him as a Distinguished Citizen and Humanitarian.
A passionate curler, he was involved in several curling leagues, ultimately becoming the President of the Fort Garry Curling Club in 1972-1973, where he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in 1983. He served as President of the Manitoba Curling Association (1986-1987) and was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in 1988. His love of curling led him and to attending many Silver Broom World Curling Championships in Europe and North America.
Golf was also a passion for him. He was a member of the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club and President of the Manitoba Senior Golfers Association, which awarded him a Distinguished Service Award in 1991, as well as a Life Membership in 1996. He received a Volunteer Award from Tache Centre in 1988. Later, as his own wife spent 14 years as a resident of Tache Centre, he was appreciated for his warmth and kindness to the staff and other residents.
He died at Winnipeg on 23 August 2010 and was buried in the Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery.
